T-Mobile Data Card Download Speed Problems: a poor 4.25 kb/s,
not the 400-700k promised by T-Mobile, assuming you don't get one of their dead IP's!

T--Mobile gave our business a download speed of 4.25 kb/s for downloading voicemail from att.com with thei latest AirCard, the GC-89.

Our cable connection download speed was 490 kb/s.

"T-Mobile is in a bind," said Roger Entner, an analyst with research firm Ovum.

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Cable companies, satellite broadcasters, and cell-phone service providers are lining up to compete for valuable new wireless licenses next week when the government kicks off an auction that could raise as much as US$15 billion.

The Federal Communications Commission on Aug. 9 commences an auction for 1,122 licenses for spectrum that is currently being used by the military and law enforcement. The licenses would help wireless carriers such as T-Mobile upgrade their services, while allowing cable and satellite companies to get into new business lines. The money raised will help switch government users to another frequency.

No one has more at stake than T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom. The fourth-largest US wireless carrier lacks the capacity to provide mobile Internet services, which the three top players are already doing. If it wants to keep pace with its rivals, T-Mobile will have to bid aggressively for a multitude of spectrum licenses. Among the markets considered essential: New York.

"T-Mobile is in a bind," said Roger Entner, an analyst with research firm Ovum. "Everybody else can pass it by. They can wait two years and get different spectrum."

Analysts expect that rivals Cingular Wireless, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint Nextel may place bids partly to ensure that T-Mobile doesn't get spectrum too cheaply. The three wireless companies could always wait until the FCC's next big auction, to occur by 2008, when airwaves with the power to penetrate through walls will come up for sale. But waiting also would mean foregoing a chance to scoop up spectrum that could come in handy as high-capacity Internet usage expands.

Another T-Mobile customer's experience:

We have had two t-mobile aircards for over a year. The signal continues to drop. I stopped by a store in Oregon and they assured me that a new card would work better. Unlike cell phones, aircard upgrades cost more than original. I decided to try it with the understanding that I could return it to any t-mobile store within 14 days. The aircard was no better than the old one. After 12 days, I went on the website to find a store within 20 miles. I went to several stores including the one designated as a corporate store.

They all refused to take the aircard because they didn't sell them. I tried over 100 times to call t-mobile, but it was impossible to get through, possibly because of Katrina. Finally, I had a friend from Oregon call and it was suggested to try a store in west palm beach. I drove two hours to a store on Northlake and they were able to accept it but refused to credit me because it was now two days past the 14. I had been trying for four days to contact t-mobile by phone and finally by email.

I left the aircard with hopes that the manager would give me the credit, especially after having to drive so far to find a store. I left the sim card in the in the aircard and asked store manager, Micheal Bassinger to give it to a friend who was driving through west palm. He suggested I call t-mobile at 611. After I explained several times, he finally understood that it is not possible to call from an aircard. He supposedly called and told me that customer service would call me. He is the most disrespectful salesperson I have ever spoken with. It is two days later and they have not called. I asked him to give it to my friend or mail it to me and he refused.

He told me that only myself or Nancy must drive two more hours to pick it up in west palm. When I expressed my disbelief, he repeatedly laughed at me. At this time, I have no refund and no service. This has been the most frustrating experience I have ever had with any kind of service provider.
